Whether you are looking for Primary or Secondary School positions, as a daily supply teacher you will always be kept on your toes. Each day, you will find yourself in a new environment, facing new challenges with many different teachers and students alike.

Preventing the disruption of education and learning loss is of utmost importance when a teacher is absent. This is where daily supply teachers come in, working hard to ensure stability and keep the classroom running smoothly when they are needed most.

In order to keep up with the fast-paced environment of substitute teaching, you should have the following skills:

Flexibility
Do you enjoy working with children from a wide selection of age groups, levels of ability, and backgrounds? Do you want a teaching job that allows you to pick the work-life balance that best suits you? Then supply teaching is the role for you!

Every school is different, and as a supply teacher, you need to be ready to use this to your advantage. Anything can happen, so get your improvisation cap on! Preparing to deliver exciting and engaging lessons, no matter the setting will enable you to have accomplished and productive days.

Organisation
If you’re not organised, then you cannot adapt to any situation the day might throw at you. Great organization skills mean that you can turn up at short notice and still have all the necessary materials to deliver an engaging and productive lesson.

As a daily supply teacher, your schedule can change just as fast as the weather. So, you should be prepared with multiple backup plans. If you keep yourself well-organised, you will be able to show up to any role and deliver enriching lessons without a hitch.

Confidence
Walking into a classroom of students you have never taught before can be quite daunting, both for you and the pupils.

The ability to put the class at ease is the key to having any supply lesson go smoothly. You should be confident enough to maintain control over the class, quickly building relationships with the students and making them feel comfortable enough to contribute.

Passionate
It’s a given that you should be driven by your passion for teaching. Passion and enthusiasm are essential tools and can help the other necessary skills come naturally. Your love for educating will help you get through even the most challenging of lessons.

If you’re not enthusiastic, then your students won’t be either. Remember, the role of any teacher, including daily supply teachers, is to share your love for the subject and teach your pupils how fun education really is.
